AMPP-CP2 Cathodic Protection Technician (NACE-CP2-001) Exam Preparation Resources
Cathodic protection work depends on sound measurements and the judgment to interpret them. The AMPP-CP2 Cathodic Protection Technician exam reflects that reality. Its theory blueprint covers electrochemistry, surveys, impressed-current power sources, field records, installation work, industry requirements, and safety. A productive study plan connects those topics through the decisions a technician makes in the field.
What AMPP-CP2 expects from a technician
AMPP-CP2 is aimed at people who already have relevant cathodic protection field experience and can work beyond introductory definitions. The exam preparation guide expects candidates to understand CP systems and components, use and troubleshoot measurement equipment, interpret survey data, and recognize the safety implications of electrical and field work.
The theory exam is only one part of the Cathodic Protection Technician credential. AMPP also requires a practical exam and an approved application that meets its education and experience rules. Passing the theory test or completing a course by itself does not award CP2 certification.
The theory exam at a glance
The AMPP CP2 Exam Preparation Guide describes the format effective December 16, 2025:
| Item | Exam information |
|---|---|
| Delivery | Computer-based testing |
| Length | 110 items, including 21 additional unscored items |
| Total time | Three hours, including four minutes for the NDA and six minutes for the tutorial |
| Item formats | Multiple choice, some multiple response, and matching |
| Resources | Closed book, with supplied PDF references for equations and conversions |
| Results | Immediate pass or fail, plus a domain strengths and weaknesses chart |
The course manual is not available during the test. The guide also says candidates may use an on-screen calculator and may request an available handheld calculator from the administrator, but may not bring a personal calculator. Check the current exam instructions when you book, especially if you rely on a calculator for resistivity or circuit problems.
AMPP does not publish domain weights in the reviewed CP2 guide. It also does not establish a fixed passing threshold or fee there. Study all eight areas rather than assuming that one topic will dominate the test.
Eight domains that meet in the field
The official blueprint names these eight areas. The right-hand column suggests what to practice; it is a study aid, not a second set of official objectives.
| AMPP domain | Useful preparation focus |
|---|---|
| Corrosion Theory | Explain corrosion cells, polarization, reference electrodes, CP methods, and influencing factors. |
| Equipment and Equipment Management | Choose and check meters, electrodes, interrupters, and other field tools. |
| Field Measurements of CP Systems | Interpret survey methods, casing conditions, and interference evidence. |
| ICCP Power Sources | Read rectifier schematics, understand power conversion, and recognize faults. |
| Field Data Interpretation and Documentation | Turn measurements into accurate records and defensible conclusions. |
| Field Supervision and Installation | Connect work plans, materials, quality checks, and CP component installation. |
| Industry Practices/Requirements | Apply relevant practices and understand recordkeeping obligations. |
| Safety | Recognize electrical, site, environmental, and stop-work hazards. |
The measurement domain deserves careful, hands-on review. The guide includes structure-to-electrolyte potential measurements, ON and ON-OFF readings, current and coupon measurements, soil resistivity, CIPS, DCVG, ACVG, casing assessment, and stray-current or AC interference. Do not memorize survey acronyms alone. For each method, know what it measures, where its limitations lie, and how an unexpected reading would change your next step.
Corrosion theory supports those measurements. Review anodic and cathodic behavior, polarization, electrolyte resistivity, reference-electrode conversions, galvanic versus impressed-current systems, and the electrical relationships used in CP work. When a calculation is involved, practice choosing the right quantities and units. The guide’s supplied reference material includes equations and conversions, but you still need to know when to use them. Consult the original AMPP PDF for precise formula symbols and diagrams.
The remaining domains are connected by field decisions. A technician may need to check a rectifier, identify a measurement error, document instrument identity and site conditions, discuss an installation deficiency, and follow permit or lockout procedures. Study these as a sequence of professional tasks, while remembering that exam preparation never replaces authorized site procedures.
A study routine built around survey evidence
Start with the AMPP CP2 Exam Preparation Guide and make a checklist from its eight domains. Mark each subtopic as familiar, needs review, or needs practice. Then work through a small number of realistic scenarios rather than reading each section in isolation.
For example, take a structure-to-electrolyte reading that appears inconsistent with earlier data. Ask whether reference-electrode placement, contact resistance, IR drop, an equipment fault, or interference could explain it. Decide what additional measurement would help, and record the conditions that would make the result traceable. This single exercise touches equipment, surveys, interpretation, and documentation without pretending they are the same domain.
Set aside separate time for calculations and for safety. Work problems involving circuits, resistivity, current, power, or conversions with the reference format described in the guide. For safety, review job safety analysis, PPE, electrical isolation, high-AC indications, step and touch potential, severe weather, and stop-work decisions in the context of your employer’s procedures.
Make practice questions expose weak decisions
Use practice questions after you have worked through the guide, not as a substitute for it. For each missed or guessed question, note the domain, the evidence you overlooked, and the step that would have led to a better answer. If you miss a field-measurement question, return to the method and its limitations; if you miss a rectifier question, revisit the relevant schematic and power-source concepts.
Timed sets can help you practice reading multiple-response and matching items carefully. Keep independent practice materials separate from AMPP’s official guide. A familiar answer pattern is less useful than being able to explain why a measurement, interpretation, or safety decision fits a new situation.
The CP2 credential goes beyond the written test
The Cathodic Protection Technician credential recognizes a wider set of requirements than theory knowledge alone. AMPP’s certification page includes a practical assessment and application review, with education and experience pathways. The current page and the November 2025 guide differ in how they describe CP1 and ethics-related training requirements, so verify your own eligibility directly with AMPP before registering. The credential is valid for three years under the current certification information.
For final preparation, review the latest AMPP CP2 certification page alongside the CP2 Exam Preparation Guide. Confirm the appointment rules, required training and experience, and the resources available during the theory exam. Then use your domain checklist to close specific gaps instead of trying to reread the entire course at the last minute.
